Some late summer nights
When the breeze awakens
I creep out to where the others won't go,
And sit among the wise, gnarled trees,
Listening intently, expectantly
to the hymn of the wind.
With a shy, distant shrill,
It begins to whisper,
The heavy gust growing heavier
To a monstrous rumble-grumble.
The harmonies and harmonies then flutter on,
Molding and meshing into the song.
And then I hear it –
It opens with a soft cry,
The tale that bears the truth,
ending with an even softer whimper.
I shut my eyes tight and firm,
Watching the distant darkness within,
Listening to the nearby whistling.
It sang to me,
